Picture this: crafting a net so advanced that, when draped over assets or personnel, it becomes a cloak of invisibility—out of sight to satellites, drones, planes, and even the most vigilant ground observers. Now, imagine making that same net adaptable to every kind of terrain—whether it is snow-dusted mountain peaks, windswept grassy fields, or jagged rocky outcrops. Add in unpredictable weather, from blinding rain to intense sun, and you have a challenge that seems straight out of a spy thriller.

Mission impossible? More like mission accepted.

The U.S. Army Product Manager Force Sustainment Systems (PMFSS) fuels the heartbeat of Army readiness, delivering adaptable, soldier-first support systems that can be swiftly deployed and dismantled—ensuring that soldiers have everything they need to stay safe and healthy, no matter where their mission takes them. But while PMFSS is a powerhouse in product development, the critical task of planning and executing field tests falls outside their scope. This is where PFS came in.

Subcontracted by PMFSS via an entity called MTEQ, PFS took on the mission to bring expertise, precision, and logistical prowess to make those vital field trials a reality. PFS accepted the thrilling challenge of crafting and running a one-of-a-kind camp in the breathtaking Lake Tekapo region of New Zealand. Nestled in this stunning landscape, the camp became a hub of innovation, where federal scientists and engineers put the Ultra-Lightweight Camouflage Net System (ULCANS) through its paces.

Orchestrating every detail to meet tight deadlines and complex demands, PFS coordinated cargo, ensured ITAR compliance, provided safety training and 24/7 telemedicine support. Our skilled team oversaw project management, secured necessary permits and documentation, managed biosecurity customs regulations, and transported vital and highly classified equipment via truck and snowmobiles. This thrilling assignment demanded every tool in the field support kit and then some! Camp supplies, local and international support, and site selection all had to be set up quickly upon arrival. The team chose two test sites—one on a valley floor, the other atop a mountain saddle across a few valleys—to assess shelters in different natural settings.

Each day was an adventure. We’d ride with the “alpine testing” team over rocky riverbeds in Hilux trucks through an active military range to set up day camp, then hop on a helicopter over snowy peaks to make dinner for the “snow testing” team on a windy mountain saddle.

Thanks to the expertise of the New Zealand military, the research team, and adaptable PFS logistics, the project wrapped up in half the scheduled time. With PFS’s support, MTEQ and PMFSS shattered the limits of troop protection, boosting both survival and effectiveness on the front lines. Together, they assisted in turning the impossible into reality, ensuring our troops are ready for any challenge and coming back stronger than ever.
